The NSW Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) has recently released its final report about costs and pricing in the funeral industry.
- about two-thirds of funeral customers did not get a quote before choosing a funeral provider
- 83% of customers felt that there was not enough information to help them make decisions about funerals
- the median price range of funerals was $5,000-$10,000
- publish information about their pricing and professional service fees
- disclose their ultimate holding company (this is especially relevant to InvoCare, which owns the majority of funeral directors in Sydney and undertakes 56% of its cremations
We thoroughly support these recommendations. We encourage all funeral directors to provide transparent and easy-to-understand pricing information on their websites and in itemised quotes. We also encourage funeral directors to make it very clear to families that their loved one can be transferred to another funeral director if they are not happy with the quote or service.
